LOV/ HUNTING

„A gamekeeper’s romance full of circus trophies.

Dear friends, welcome to today’s hunt in the name of gamekeepers’ company The Trick Brothers and the game enclosure Holektiv. We would like you to observe all the security measures. Don’t shoot ducks that fly low and as for the deer shoot just the weak ones. Be careful as a hurt goose might be troublesome. You can add another trophy to hundreds of foxes and does. But again – be careful – a lot of women might cause trouble and a hunter might become a game animal.

We are inviting you to a great banquet at the end of the hunt. A piglet is tender, beer is properly chilled and the band has a great zest. Have a nice weather, duck call in tune, straight pellets, good shot and GOOD LUCK!”

The Trick Brothers met Holektiv in La Fabrika in Holešovice in May 2007 and then the idea of their common project arose. Seemingly delicate women of Holektiv – Andrea Vykysalá, Karolína Křížková a Eva Stará – are able to perform acrobatics easily and use simple gestures and means of expression to combine physical theatre, acrobatics, dancing and clown’s elements. The Trick Brothers – Adam Jarchovský and Václav Jelínek – is a unique juggling duo in the Czech Republic. They specialize in combining technically exacting juggling with theatrical expression that is based on gags and principles of grotesque. Both companies have an extraordinary sense of humour and they always stay on top of things. All these skills are used in the project called Hunting, which is moving between new circus, dancing and theatre. The performance has been drafted and directed by Veronika Poldauf Riedlbauchová and it followed the successful cooperation in the Trick Brothers’s shows Swimming Pool and Funeral.

Although both companies are really distinctive, the actors were able to unify and make an imaginative performance consisting of comic fragments, perfect gags, brilliant juggling acts as well as dramatic action situations.
It is an amazingly smart performance full of both humour and a little bit scary moments. Combining of female and male principles is original and functional. I liked variable settings and costumes that set the performance somewhere between club parties of 1920s and fantasy. It is a really beautiful performance and I hope that all performers will be properly appreciated.
Hunting is hunting, gamekeepers are gamekeepers and sooner or later the gun always goes off. There is passion as well as mystery in the performance. The authors express the atmosphere of enticement of the unknown really well.
The three girls complement with each other well. Petite Andrea Vykysalá and Karolína Křížková represent female delicateness while Eva Stará with the figure of a “big mum” brings an element of unrestrained sensuality. Although the performance is a metaphor of the relationship between men and women, the girls’ acrobatics prove between lines that men are not needed. The girls are able to show all the acrobatic figures based on strength and balance, mostly done by men, themselves. Eva Stará carries her short colleagues, shows them like dolls, one of them even stands on Eva’s head, when Eva is lying on her back, she lifts one girl on her feet and the other one on her palms. It is unbelievable! The comic is omnipresent in the performance. Clowns’ duo Brothers in Trick is closer to it. I was really impressed by their stags’ fight. They fasten round their antlers made just by Jarchovký’s and Jelínek’s spread arms with clubs. Dramatic music changes into brass music and makes a parallel of animal’s rivalry and a pub fight, which is usually a game more than a real fight. The whole performance is a game. It is not necessary to think, it is enough to enjoy witty connection of motifs and excellent movement passages.
Holektiv’s dancing and acrobatics are always elegant, gentle with an emphasis on perfect timing and self-irony. The ladies perfectly imitate animals and together with gamekeepers’ duo play comic situations on the principle of grotesque that culminate in the final banquet. Brothers in Trick show perfect juggling with balls, cones and knives and they also show a great sense of theatrical feelings. It is also necessary to point out good coordination of both companies.
